What is
Transcendental Meditation (TM)?

Transcendental Meditation is a simple, natural, effortless mental technique. It allows the mind to settle inward beyond thought to experience a state of restful alertness

The TM technique is a simple–yet very effective–way to enjoy inner peace, dissolve stress, and access your full potential

TM practice is easy and enjoyable. Anyone can do it, sitting comfortably with eyes closed, for 20 minutes twice a day. There is no effort involved.

What is
Transcendental Meditation NOT?

Transcendental Meditation practice is not a religion. Nor does it interfere with one's religion—or lack of one. It is not a belief system

You don't even have to believe in TM for it to work.

The TM technique is different from other types of meditation in how it is practiced and in the positive effects it produces on the mind and body.

TM is distinct from mindfulness. It's a unique technique with its own specific mechanics and benefits.

TM is not a form of concentration or control. It's an effortless technique that allows the mind to settle naturally.

TM practice is proven to be effective

What are the benefits?

Original peer-reviewed and published studies have been conducted on the TM technique from 1970 to the present. That is unprecedented and unique among research on specific meditation techniques.

Research shows that TM provides important benefits to mental and physical health—as well as emotional well-being.

Transcendental Meditation practice provides profound rest to both mind and body. This can dissolve deeply rooted stress in the nervous system and improve how the brain functions.

After just a few minutes of TM practice people typically feel more refreshed, clearer mind, and ready for action.

Regular practice of TM has been shown by scientific studies to reduce stress and anxiety, improve focus and concentration, promote relaxation, and enhance overall well-being. It can also lead to increased creativity and energy levels.

TM practice is a powerful tool that has been scientifically shown to reduce anxiety and other disorders by actually eliminating stress—not merely coping with it, reducing its impact, or medicating its effects. These are some of the effects that the Transcendental Meditation technique has on our mental wellbeing: reduction of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) reduction of depression decreased cortisol reduction of anxiety improvement to sleep and insomnia reduction

Reduced Stress and Anxiety

"The 'fight or flight' system, which is activated by stress, is reset by TM." - Fred Travis, Ph.D., psychologist and professor

The Transcendental Meditation technique has been found to be one of the most effective tools to eliminate stress and reduce the problems that stress can cause: trait anxiety, depression, PTSD, poor sleep and insomnia....

Reduced stress and anxiety, both of which are major distractions that can hinder our ability to concentrate. Lower cortisol levels , as meditation promotes a calmer and more focused mind. Enhanced attention span by encouraging practitioners to stay present in the moment, making it easier to concentrate on tasks without getting distracted. Emotional stability, as meditation fosters emotional resilience, allows individuals to manage their emotions better and stay focused on their goals. Increased self-awareness, helping individuals recognize when their mind starts to wander and quickly bring their attention back to the task at hand. Improved cognitive function, such as better problem-solving, decision-making, and critical thinking contributes to better focus and efficiency.

The natural functioning of our nervous system can be disrupted when stress and strain accumulate in the mind and body, but the Transcendental Meditation technique has the opposite effect, relieving stress and naturally bringing our bodies into balance. Anxiety and stress are frequently cited as the primary cause of insomnia, however, the TM technique produces a state of profound inner stillness, dissolving the deeply-rooted stresses that can disrupt our body's natural rhythms. In this way, the TM technique can break the cycle of insomnia. Peer-reviewed scientific research supports this, demonstrating that the effects of TM practice on the mind and body counteract the factors that cause insomnia. This is why so many people report a significant improvement to their quality of sleep after learning the TM technique, often within a few days of beginning regular practice.

How is TM different?

The Transcendental Meditation technique is distinct from all other forms of meditation. Other techniques maintain a level of mental activity at the surface of the mind.

TM is an effortless technique that doesn't require concentration, control, or monitoring of thoughts. It's completely natural, since it uses the nature of the mind to go for more. What is more?

Total silence, pure creativity, the reservoir of energy and peace.

TM practice is characterized by the settling down of mental activity, an inward trajectory of the mind
transcending thought.

The TM technique gives rise to a unique state of brain functioning which has numerous holistic benefits.

"Whatever the reason we're coming to TM, we're getting the full spectrum of results for our mind and our body."

It is also completely effortless, and therefore much easier to master than other forms of meditation. Unlike other meditation techniques, TM doesn't involve controlling the mind. No effort, no concentration. TM promotes a unique state of restful alertness, allowing the mind to settle into a state of deep relaxation.

What is the origin of
Transcendental Meditation?

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, whose life's work was to revive and demystify the timeless knowledge of meditation, and verify its effectiveness through the lens of modern science, began teaching Transcendental Meditation in the 1950s.

After refining and systematizing the teaching of TM, Maharishi began a movement to make the technique available worldwide. He oversaw the training of thousands of teachers and established a non-profit foundation to preserve the authenticity of the TM technique for generations to come.

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi spent 13 years studying with his teacher, a renowned custodian of the thousands-year-old tradition of ancient Vedic wisdom.

Maharishi revived, systematized, and demystified the teaching of TM to share it with people throughout the world to develop their consciousness.

By 1958, Maharishi was traveling the world teaching the Transcendental Meditation technique. He oversaw the training of thousands of certified TM teachers and established a non-profit foundation to preserve the authenticity of the TM technique for generations to come.

Dr. Tony Nader, MD, PhD

Maharishi chose Dr. Tony Nader, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard-trained medical doctor and one of the world’s eminent Vedic scholars, as his successor.

Today, Dr. Nader leads the non-profit Transcendental Meditation organizations, their programs, and teachers in over 100 countries.

Dr. Nader is guiding Maharishi's remarkable legacy into the 21st century, by bringing the science of consciousness to new audiences and expanding our understanding of the furthest reaches of human potential.
